Kenya vs Tanzania safari: the short answer
Choose Kenya as your starting point if you want a short Masai Mara stay, a Mara conservancy programme with walks or night drives, or an Amboseli-focused elephant safari. Choose northern Tanzania as your starting point if southern Serengeti calving or a Serengeti–Ngorongoro route is the main reason to go.
Neither country is automatically better for wildlife, cheaper or more suitable for a first safari. A three-night fly-in Mara stay and a multi-stop northern Tanzania road trip solve different travel problems. Compare the actual parks, nights and transport before comparing their totals. This page compares Kenya’s Mara and Amboseli with northern Tanzania, not every safari region in either country.

| Your decision | Kenya | Northern Tanzania |
|---|---|---|
| Southern-plains wildebeest calving | The Mara is not the southern calving-plains base. | Begin with the Serengeti ecosystem’s southern short-grass plains around the calving period. |
| Mara River season | Compare a named Masai Mara reserve or Triangle base. | Compare a named northern Serengeti base, rather than a generic central camp. |
| A short, one-base safari | A Wilson–Mara fly-in stay is a clear option to price. | A Serengeti fly-in stay is also possible; specify the sector and strip. |
| Several contrasting northern-circuit stops | Mara plus Amboseli adds a distinct elephant and wetland focus, with another transfer. | Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti form a useful shortlist, but too many stops can compress viewing time. |
| Walks and night drives | Compare a named conservancy programme, such as Naboisho. | Do not infer permission from another country or park; select a programme with location-specific activities. |
| Cost winner | Cannot be decided from the country name or a bare camp rate. | Cannot be decided without matching transport, entries, nights and inclusions. |
For migration travel, compare places and months together
The strongest geographical distinction is calving versus river country. TANAPA places the preferred southern short-grass calving grounds between Naabi gate and the Ngorongoro highlands, with concentrated calving around mid-February. That points to the southern Serengeti ecosystem rather than the Kenyan Mara.
For the northern river phase, the comparison is closer. Kenya Tourism Board describes the Mara phase broadly from July to October, while TANAPA describes the river’s dry-season role on the Serengeti side. Choose the actual reserve sector or northern Serengeti base, then compare the route. Herd movement is not a timetable and neither side sells a guaranteed crossing.
TANAPA: calving geography and Mara River guidanceMara or Serengeti is the narrower decision
If your shortlist is already entirely about the migration ecosystem, use the park comparison rather than choosing from a country-wide list of attractions. It explains why a southern Serengeti camp, northern Serengeti camp and Mara camp are three different propositions.
Compare Masai Mara and SerengetiKenya: a Mara base or a deliberate two-park trip
For a short first visit, our starting recommendation is three nights in the Mara rather than several one-night park stops. Safarilink lists Wilson–Mara flights serving multiple airstrips; the camp and strip must be chosen together. Include the transfer from your international arrival airport if it is not Wilson.
Amboseli earns consideration when elephants and its wetland-and-plains setting are a separate priority. For a two-base proposal, compare the actual transfer arrangement with the alternative of staying longer in the Mara. A conservancy such as Naboisho is another way to vary the experience without adding a distant national park: Asilia advertises guided walking and night drives there, with reserve excursions a separate element of the programme.
Safarilink: Mara access from Wilson and other safari areasTanzania: the northern circuit needs enough nights
Northern Tanzania is a useful shortlist when you want Serengeti plus Ngorongoro or Tarangire. Ngorongoro is not a Serengeti sector: the conservation authority lists Loduare, near Karatu, as its main entry gate and Naabi at the Serengeti boundary. This gives a road circuit actual geographical structure, rather than a list of disconnected names.
As an initial pacing recommendation, compare six safari nights allocated as two near Tarangire, one near Ngorongoro and three in your chosen Serengeti sector. This is a planning pattern, not a dated tour or a promise of transfer times. Add arrival and departure accommodation where your flights require it. If the Serengeti sector is the whole reason for travelling, use the nights there instead of adding every stop.
Ngorongoro’s general information page lists earlier closing for crater access than for conservation-area gates. A late arrival to the area does not imply a late crater descent. Keep the crater visit and the onward Serengeti transfer as distinct pieces of the route.
Ngorongoro authority: access gates, airstrips and hoursWhich is cheaper? Compare the same basket
Do not compare a shared Kenya road tour with a private Tanzania fly-in trip and call the difference a country premium. Obtain totals for the same party and dates, with the same room occupancy, number of safari nights and private or shared vehicle arrangement. Separate international flights and beach nights from the safari subtotal.
Include reserve or park entries, conservancy charges, vehicle and guide, meals, internal flights, airstrip transfers and any special visit such as a crater descent. A Mara conservancy’s reserve excursion and a northern Tanzania circuit’s crater visit are different components; neither should disappear inside “all-inclusive”.
A useful Kenya-specific warning is the Triangle manager’s daytime entry validity: its published ticket runs 06:00–18:00 and does not carry overnight. Count admissions for your actual arrival and departure pattern. Exact costs vary by visitor status, date and arrangements, so this comparison does not present an unsupported national average.
Mara Conservancy: admission validity and fee conditionsDiani, Mombasa coast or Zanzibar?
Pick the beach you want, then price the connection from the final safari base. For a Kenya holiday, Diani or the Mombasa coast keeps the extension in Kenya; Zanzibar is in Tanzania. For a northern Tanzania safari, Zanzibar is an option to investigate, but it still needs a flight and an island transfer rather than an assumed road continuation.
The decisive comparison is the complete end-to-end itinerary: final game drive, strip or airport transfer, flight or surface connection, hotel transfer and onward international departure. A direct flight must exist for your dates; a destination on an airline map does not prove that connection. Where the extension crosses the international border, verify the entry requirements for your nationality and full route before paying.
Choose Kenya when these are your priorities
Start with Kenya if the Mara base, conservancy activities or Amboseli setting is already the trip you want. Use the Kenya guide to separate those choices before comparing accommodation. Do not add Tanzania simply because the ecosystems meet at a border.
Build a Kenya safariChoose Tanzania when the northern route is the point
Start with Tanzania if you want the southern calving plains or a route combining Serengeti with northern-circuit stops. First locate the Serengeti sector, then give transfers and any Ngorongoro visit their own time. The Tanzania guide is the next step for choosing the bases.
