Start with one coherent part of Tanzania
For a first northern Tanzania safari, compare Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti rather than trying to cover the whole country. Tarangire adds a river-and-woodland setting, Ngorongoro adds a crater visit, and Serengeti needs a sector choice that fits your dates. This guide covers that northern shortlist; it does not rank the southern or western safari regions.
For six safari nights, our starting recommendation is two near Tarangire, one near Ngorongoro and three in the relevant Serengeti sector. This is an editorial pacing example, not a fixed tour or a guarantee of transfer times. Add arrival and departure nights where flights require them. If calving or the northern river area is the entire reason to go, reduce the extra stops and give the chosen Serengeti base more time.

| Your decision | Tarangire | Serengeti |
|---|---|---|
| A reason to investigate | A river-and-woodland safari with elephants among the wildlife highlighted by TANAPA. | Open plains and the wider migration ecosystem, with distinct central, western, southern and northern bases. |
| The seasonal question | Do your dates fit a river-focused dry-season visit, or a different rainy-season experience? | Do your dates and wildlife goal fit the proposed sector, rather than simply the country? |
| The location to resolve | The named accommodation and whether it sits inside or outside the national park. | The camp’s exact location for your dates, the sector and the road gate or airstrip serving it. |
| The transfer to make explicit | The approach from Arusha or your previous base, and the onward journey. | The road entry and overnight sequence, or the arrival airstrip and camp transfer. |
| What the park name cannot tell you | Your actual viewing time, activity inclusions or room location. | Whether a trip is based near the calving plains, central Seronera or northern river country. |
Tarangire: add it for the landscape, not another tick
TANAPA describes the Tarangire River and its associated permanent swamps as critical dry-season water sources for migratory animals. Its park guide highlights elephants, river scenery and baobabs, and identifies accommodation both inside and outside the park. These are useful reasons to compare a Tarangire stay with simply extending the Serengeti portion.
The brochure identifies the road approach from Arusha, but a published distance is not a door-to-door transfer estimate for your camp. Ask which accommodation is proposed, how the arrival and departure days work, and whether the price includes the activities you want. Walks, balloons and night drives should be individually confirmed rather than inferred from a general park description.
If your dates do not match the river-focused dry-season proposition, ask what the operator expects the Tarangire portion to contribute instead. Do not use its dry-season description as a promise for any month.
Plan a Tarangire safari: seasons, bases and nightsNgorongoro: plan the crater visit separately
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a separate stop, not another name for Serengeti. The authority identifies Loduare, 14 km from Karatu, as its main access gate and Naabi at the Serengeti boundary. Karatu and the crater rim are therefore different overnight propositions: decide whether you want a town-side base or to sleep within the conservation area before comparing hotels.
The authority’s information page lists crater access from 06:00 to 16:00, earlier closing than its general conservation-area gates. Schedule the crater visit explicitly rather than assuming a late arrival can become a descent. Keep the crater service, conservation-area access and onward transfer visible in the quote. A one-night stop is our starting allocation when the visit is part of a longer circuit; flight times or a slower pace may justify another night.
Plan a Ngorongoro crater visit: bases, hours and feesSerengeti: decide which part you mean
TANAPA’s park guide places Seronera in the centre, Kirawira in the west, Kusini in the south, and Kogatende and Lamai in the north. It also describes road and air access. Use these names to interrogate a proposal that gives you several nights labelled only “Serengeti”.
An arrival point should serve the actual camp and the experience you selected. A northern airstrip is not interchangeable with central Seronera just because both are in the same park. Ask for the exact overnight location, the transfer from the gate or strip, and any planned move between sectors. The guide establishes geography, not a current flight timetable.
The park is part of a wider ecosystem that includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. If a camp is described using a broad ecosystem label, have its protected-area location identified explicitly. Do not assume all accommodation carrying the Serengeti name sits inside the national park.
TANAPA: Serengeti sectors and accessMatch the wildlife goal to the seasonal geography
The short-grass calving plains and the northern Mara River are different trip focuses. TANAPA’s migration guideline places the preferred calving grounds between Naabi gate and the Ngorongoro highlands, with concentrated calving around mid-February. It describes the Mara River’s role in sustaining the migration in the dry season.
Choose the area that fits your objective, then compare camps and access. No month guarantees a river crossing and no camp location guarantees that the herds will be nearby. Park management can also close areas for conservation or extremely wet conditions. Your route needs to remain worthwhile without a promised wildlife event.
TANAPA: migration geography and viewing restrictionsWhat to ask for in a northern-circuit proposal
- A night-by-night route
- Named accommodation, its location and the number of nights at each base. Identify any unconfirmed substitutions.
- Directed transfers
- The actual pick-up and drop-off locations, road entry or airstrip, camp transfer and any flight connection. Separate travel from planned game viewing.
- A complete price basket
- The total for your party and dates, with rooms, meals, vehicle and guide arrangements, park-related charges, flights and transfers itemised as included or excluded.
- Confirmed activity conditions
- Which activities are booked, whether they are private or shared, and their location-specific requirements. Do not transfer permissions between parks.
- The onward leg
- A stated end point and connection plan. A beach extension or international flight needs its own travel time, conditions and cost.
Next: locate your Serengeti base
If Serengeti is the trip’s anchor, compare the centre, southern calving plains, western corridor and northern river area before selecting a camp. Our sector guide explains the place names you should expect to see in a useful itinerary.

If travel dates are already fixed, use the northern Tanzania timing guide to compare the broad seasonal patterns for Tarangire and Serengeti. Climate patterns are a starting point; current road, camp and service arrangements still need confirmation for your trip.

Compare this northern Tanzania route with a Mara-led Kenya trip. If the available nights only support one base, compare that stay directly rather than accepting a longer circuit simply because it lists more parks.

Compare guided driving and fly-in proposals on the same per-person sharing basis. The Tanzania cost guide supplies attributed benchmarks and separates Ngorongoro’s per-person admission from its per-vehicle crater service fee.
Build a Tanzania safari budgetA complete seven-day northern route
The Arusha–Tarangire–Serengeti–Ngorongoro circuit allocates six nights explicitly and separates the transfer days from the full game-drive days. Use it to compare quotes without counting arrival day as a full park visit.

Southern calving plains and northern river-crossing opportunities need different camp locations. Match the event and travel month before adding a migration promise to a general circuit.
