Tanzania safari cost: driving, fly-in and six-night budgets

Attributed US-dollar safari benchmarks, six-night calculations and a Ngorongoro fee example, with private/shared and road/fly-in costs separated.

How much should you budget for a Tanzania safari?

Go2Africa’s published Tanzania guide gives entry-level guided driving benchmarks of US$770 per person per night in low season and US$880 in high season, sharing a room. Its mid-range driving figures are US$880 and US$1,100; mid-range fly-in figures are US$1,650 and US$1,870. These are one specialist seller’s guidelines, checked on 24 October 2026, not a market-wide minimum or a live quote for your dates.

For six safari nights, the entry-level driving benchmark becomes US$4,620–5,280 per person; the mid-range fly-in benchmark becomes US$9,900–11,220. International flights, visas and optional activities are excluded by the source. Do not mistake the seller’s premium-led price range for proof that less expensive group camping trips do not exist.

What the six-night calculation does and does not buy

Each subtotal multiplies the seller’s per-person nightly guideline by six; it does not represent a currently available six-night itinerary. For two adults sharing, the entry-level driving subtotal is US$9,240–10,560 and mid-range driving is US$10,560–13,200. A solo traveller cannot assume those sharing rates apply.

Use the same six safari nights when comparing with Kenya, and the same season, room occupancy and transport class. An itinerary with an Arusha hotel night, four camp nights and a beach night is not six safari nights. The source separately publishes accommodation-only benchmarks; do not add those to the tour benchmark or compare them with a complete safari package.

Build a northern-circuit basket before requesting quotes

As an editorial comparison basket, use six safari nights: one near Tarangire, two around Karatu or Ngorongoro and three in the Serengeti. Price an Arusha arrival hotel and airport transfers separately if you need them. This allocation is a way to compare proposals, not a minimum stay, route quotation or promise that every seasonal Serengeti sector fits the same drive.

Ask both sellers to cost identical bases, room type, meals and drive arrangements. Name the Serengeti sector; a central-Serengeti stay and a northern river-season stay can change the route and flight requirement. If you want more time in Tarangire, move a night from another stop rather than silently extending the trip.

Private versus shared: separate the vehicle from the room

A private road safari uses a vehicle and guide for your party across the agreed route. A shared departure spreads some transport costs across other travellers but fixes more of the itinerary. At a fly-in camp, game drives may use shared camp vehicles even when your room and transfers are private. Have the vehicle arrangement written next to the price.

For a couple, compare a private road quote with a shared departure using the same accommodation and fees. For four adults, obtain a fresh quote rather than multiplying the couple’s total: per-person rooms and admissions do not become cheaper merely because the vehicle cost is shared. Children, single rooms and private-vehicle supplements need their own line items.

Ngorongoro shows why vehicle and person fees differ

The NCAA public tariff page lists US$70.80 entry for non-East African citizens aged 16 or above and a US$295 crater service fee per vehicle/trip for that visitor category. Checked on 24 October 2026, these are published figures, not a guarantee of future tariffs.

For two eligible adults sharing one crater vehicle, the entry-plus-crater-service arithmetic is (2 × $70.80) + $295 = $436.60 total, or $218.30 each. With four such adults in that vehicle it is $578.20 total, or $144.55 each. This deliberately partial example excludes the motor-vehicle permit, guide/vehicle hire, accommodation, any concession or camping fees and other chargeable services. It is not the full cost of a crater visit.

Road, fly-in or a drive-in/fly-out route?

A guided road itinerary can connect the northern parks while keeping the same driver and vehicle. Its cost advantage is useful only if you accept the transfer days. A fly-in proposal reduces some long road sections but adds air tickets, airstrip transfers and the camp’s drive arrangements.

A drive-in/fly-out proposal is worth pricing if you want Tarangire and Ngorongoro before the Serengeti but do not want to retrace the long road journey. Ask for the precise departure strip and onward airport, the flight fare and taxes, baggage allowance, and whether the last camp transfer and final city transfer are included. Do not assume that “fly-in” includes international flights.

Go2Africa: safari types and transport inclusions to distinguish

The costs that belong outside the camp-night subtotal

Build the trip total as the quoted safari package plus only its excluded items. Typical lines to resolve are international tickets, arrival/departure hotels, airport transfers, domestic flights, park and concession fees, the crater service fee, drinks or laundry outside the rate, insurance, visa costs, gratuities and optional activities. Mark each included, excluded or not applicable before adding it.

Do not add the Ngorongoro example again if the operator already includes those fees. Similarly, do not add a second vehicle-and-guide budget to a driving package that already supplies them. Require the final price currency, payment schedule and treatment of fee changes in writing. This guide does not quote an all-in total without the missing trip-specific inputs.

Where to reduce the bill without losing the purpose of the trip

Reduce the number of transfers, compare a shared departure, use fewer expensive camp nights, or ask the same properties for another travel window. Moving dates can change both the accommodation rate and the wildlife area that makes sense. A cheaper central-Serengeti stay is not an equivalent substitute if the whole trip is built around a far-northern river-season base.

Do not add southern Tanzania to this short northern-circuit basket just to collect more park names. First decide which wildlife area justifies the flight or drive, then compare the same route in two transport formats.
