Start with the northern circuit
For a northern Tanzania safari combining Tarangire and Serengeti, June to September is a straightforward dry-season starting window. For southern Serengeti calving, begin with January–February, with TANAPA describing the concentrated calving period around mid-February. These are different trips: a northern river base is not a substitute for the southern calving plains.
This guide covers Serengeti and Tarangire, not every Tanzania safari region. Use the seasonal table to choose a park and sector before selecting a camp. Fixed school-holiday dates can still work, but they should determine the appropriate base rather than force the same migration route in every month.
A seasonal starting point
- January–February
- Tarangire’s park guide identifies a dry interval. In the Serengeti ecosystem, the short-grass calving period centres on mid-February, rather than the northern Mara River.
- March–May
- Tarangire’s long-rains period. Serengeti’s guide describes rain through April and a dry season beginning in May: the two park calendars do not line up exactly.
- June–September
- Within the dry-season windows described for both parks. Tarangire’s river and permanent swamps become important water sources; northern Serengeti river viewing is a separate sector decision.
- October–December
- A transition: Tarangire’s brochure includes October in both its dry-season and short-rains windows. Serengeti’s guide places the start of the rains in November. Treat the edges as variable, not fixed changeover dates.
Tarangire: plan around rainfall and water
TANAPA describes short rains around October–December, long rains in March–May and dry intervals in June–October and January–February. The overlap around October is a useful reminder that a climate calendar is a broad pattern, not a daily forecast.
The Tarangire River and its associated permanent swamps provide dry-season water for migratory animals. If that concentration is your reason for going, start with a dry-season plan. A rainy-season visit is a different proposition, not a failed version of the same river-focused trip.

TANAPA’s migration guideline places the short-grass calving grounds between Naabi gate and the Ngorongoro highlands, with a concentrated calving period around mid-February. That points you towards the southern ecosystem, not a camp chosen solely for access to the Mara River in the north.
The same guidance explains the Mara River’s dry-season importance to the migration. River viewing requires the appropriate northern base and permitted viewing areas. It is not a timed performance: neither a calendar month nor a camp address guarantees a crossing.

Serengeti’s park guide describes a rainy season from November to April and a dry season from May to October. It also distinguishes Seronera in the centre, Kirawira in the west and Kogatende and Lamai in the north. A booking that says only “Serengeti” leaves a major part of the timing decision unanswered.
Use your chosen wildlife goal to select a sector, then match the airstrip or road approach and accommodation to it. For a trip combining Tarangire with Serengeti, compare both parks’ seasonal patterns rather than assuming the same conditions throughout.
TANAPA: Serengeti climate and sector geographyKeep climate, sightings and access separate
Climate normals help you choose a travel window. They do not establish the weather on your travel dates, where the herds will be that week, or whether every road and viewing area will be open. TANAPA’s crossing guidance allows areas to be closed for conservation or extremely wet conditions.
Before committing to a seasonal camp or a river-focused route, establish its operating dates and the proposed access with the supplier. Keep those current arrangements separate from the broad seasonal patterns above.

For a southern-calving or northern-river trip, use the sector guide to recognise the relevant bases and arrival points. A seasonal calendar cannot make a central camp close to both ends of the ecosystem.
