Start with a sector, not just “Serengeti”
Serengeti National Park sits within a wider ecosystem that includes parts of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. A trip name can refer to that wider landscape, while your nights and game drives happen in particular places. Begin by separating the centre, the southern plains, the western corridor and the north.
TANAPA’s park guide locates Seronera in the centre, Kirawira in the west, Kusini in the south, and Kogatende and Lamai in the north. Those names are useful when reading an itinerary: they give you more information than a row that simply says “Serengeti”. The guide is a geographical reference, not a current flight timetable.
TANAPA: Serengeti park guide and access mapRead the place names in your itinerary
- Central / Seronera
- TANAPA identifies Seronera as the central airstrip and a location for park-managed campsites and other accommodation.
- Southern plains
- The short-grass calving grounds described by TANAPA lie between Naabi gate and the Ngorongoro highlands.
- Western corridor / Kirawira
- TANAPA places Kirawira in the west and identifies Ndabaka as a western entrance and campsite location.
- North / Kogatende and Lamai
- TANAPA identifies these northern airstrips. A Mara River focus needs a base and access plan for the river area.
How long to stay, and which base to choose
For a first stay, our starting recommendation is three nights in one sector rather than three camps in different corners of the park. That usually leaves two full days between arrival and departure. Add nights when you want two sectors; do not count the transfer between them as a full day based in either.
For calving, begin with the southern short-grass plains. For a Mara River trip, begin with the north. If neither event is the priority, compare a central Seronera base rather than paying for a long sector change without a clear purpose. Kirawira and the western approach are a separate geographical choice, particularly if your route comes from the west. These are planning recommendations; animal locations and current services still vary.
Southern plains: a calving-focused trip
TANAPA’s migration guideline places the preferred wildebeest calving grounds on the short-grass plains between Naabi gate and the Ngorongoro highlands. It describes a concentrated calving period around mid-February. That is a concrete reason to compare southern-plains bases for a calving-focused trip.
The wider ecosystem crosses protected-area boundaries. Have the exact camp location identified, including whether the nights are inside the national park or elsewhere in the ecosystem. “Southern Serengeti” in a programme title is less precise than the actual overnight address.
TANAPA: migration and Mara River crossing guidelineMara River: a different seasonal focus
The same TANAPA guideline identifies the Mara River as the water source that sustains the migration in the dry season. A trip organised around this river is therefore geographically different from one organised around the southern calving plains. Neither a travel month nor a river-side base guarantees a crossing.
If a quote includes both areas, compare the nights in each and the transfer between them. Treat that transfer as part of the trip, rather than assuming two stops with the same park name are interchangeable.
TANAPA: migration and Mara River crossing guidelineMatch the arrival point to the base
The park has several road entrances and airstrips. TANAPA’s guide names Naabi Hill and Ndabaka among the gates, and Seronera, Kusini, Kirawira, Kogatende and Lamai among the airstrips. The useful question is which of these serves the nights you have actually chosen.
A fly-in programme should identify the airstrip and onward camp transfer; a road programme should show the entry point and sequence of nights. This is enough to spot a mismatch before comparing quotes. It is not a door-to-door transport plan, and no flight frequency or driving time is assumed.
TANAPA: Serengeti park guide and access mapLeave room for the park’s rules
TANAPA’s river-crossing guideline requires vehicles to remain stationary in designated viewing areas, allow animals space to pass and respect the limits at each crossing point. It also says park management can close areas to protect wildlife or allow damaged ground to recover.
Build the trip around the area you want to understand, rather than a promise that a driver can reach any animal or crossing. If you are still deciding between the two sides of the ecosystem, the Mara–Serengeti comparison below separates the seasonal focus from the country name.

Use the Tanzania timing guide to compare the broad seasonal patterns of Serengeti and Tarangire. Keep climate, herd movement and current access arrangements separate when turning that calendar into a booking.
When to go on safari in TanzaniaStill deciding between the Mara and Serengeti?
Compare the southern calving-plains proposition with a river-season trip based in the Maasai Mara or northern Serengeti. The useful choice depends on your wildlife goal, exact base and access arrangements, not a promise of a crossing.
Compare Masai Mara and SerengetiChoose a lodge in the right sector
Compare central Seronera with northern Kogatende and Lamai and southern Ndutu and Kusini. Permanent lodges and seasonal tented camps answer different facility and location needs.
Compare Serengeti safari lodges by areaIf the migration is the main reason for going
Use a broad seasonal location guide before choosing a camp. The southern calving plains, western movement and northern Mara River season are distinct safari briefs.
