Serengeti safari lodges: where to stay by area and season

Compare central Seronera, northern Kogatende and Lamai, and southern Ndutu and Kusini before choosing a permanent lodge or seasonal tented camp.

Choose the sector before the lodge

For a first Serengeti safari without a specific migration target, start with a central base around Seronera. For Mara River migration viewing, look in the north around Kogatende or Lamai, broadly July–October. For calving-season interest, look south around Ndutu and Kusini, broadly January–March. These are planning windows, not promises about the herds on your dates.

A room described simply as being in the Serengeti is not enough information. The sector determines which drives are practical, which airstrip makes sense and whether the camp works with a road itinerary from Ngorongoro. A pool, room photograph or low headline rate cannot fix the wrong location.

Match the sector to the travel month

Use the Tanzania seasonal guide to compare southern calving plains, central wildlife viewing and northern river-focused stays before choosing the camp's operating block. Camp opening dates do not guarantee herd positions.

Central stays: a practical road-circuit base

Seronera is the central airstrip identified by TANAPA, and the surrounding central sector is the simplest starting point for a general Serengeti stay. It works with the southern approach through Naabi Hill and avoids making the far north an obligatory part of a first visit. Three nights is a useful editorial starting allocation because it gives two full days between arrival and departure.

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is one permanent-lodge example listed by TANAPA. Its own site describes stone-built, thatched rondavel rooms, private balconies and a swimming pool. That makes it a relevant comparison for travellers who want a conventional room and lodge facilities rather than a camp that relocates. This is a description of the published format, not a claim of a personal stay or an independent quality ranking.

Northern stays: Kogatende or Lamai

Put the north first if river-crossing opportunities are your main objective. A camp near the relevant river area leaves more of the day available for watching wildlife instead of driving up from the centre. Kogatende and Lamai are separate airstrips; use the one attached to the actual camp transfer.

Sayari is a permanent tented-camp example in the northern Serengeti. Asilia lists Kogatende as its nearest airstrip, with an approximately 20-minute drive, and says the camp opens June–March and closes April–May. It has a pool, hot-water showers and baths. The operator describes July–October as the migration period, while the months after the herds move south are a resident-wildlife stay rather than an equivalent migration booking. Operating dates can change, and the live page is not room availability for your dates.

Southern stays: Ndutu is not the crater

The southern plains are the starting point for a calving-focused search. The wider migration ecosystem spans Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ndutu belongs to that wider southern-plains decision; a Ngorongoro Crater-rim lodge is not a substitute for sleeping near the herds. Kusini is another southern location, not simply another name for Ndutu.

Ubuntu Migration Camp is a useful example of a seasonal tented format. Asilia currently places it at Kusini from mid-December to mid-March and at the northern Lamai Wedge from June to mid-November, with closure periods between those blocks. Its tents have en suite bathrooms and bucket showers. The same camp name therefore describes two different safari locations at different times of year.

Ubuntu: seasonal locations and camp facilities

Permanent lodge or mobile tented camp?

Choose a permanent lodge when the fixed location suits the trip and you value its room layout or facilities. Choose a seasonal camp when its published location matches the wildlife focus and you accept its particular tent and bathroom setup. Tented does not automatically mean basic: Sayari and Ubuntu are both tented but have materially different facilities and operating patterns.

Mobile describes a camp relocating between seasonal sites. It does not mean your tent moves every night or follows a herd on demand. You normally stay at the camp location scheduled for that season. The booking needs the month-specific site, operating dates and the matching airstrip, not only the brand name.

Protected-area boundaries affect the booking

TANAPA identifies Serengeti National Park as one part of the wider ecosystem, alongside places such as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Grumeti and Ikorongo game reserves, and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Those names do not describe one uniform admission area. A lodge marketed under the wider Serengeti name can have a different protected-area location and fee arrangement from a lodge inside the national park.

Compare quotes using the camp’s actual location and the drives included. For a western or concession-based stay, establish whether national-park excursions and the associated transfers and fees are included. Do not assume an outside stay gives unrestricted access to every part of the national park.

Match the stay to your arrival and route

A road trip from Arusha via Tarangire and Ngorongoro fits a central Serengeti block more naturally than a brief stay at the Mara River. For a northern focus, a flight into Kogatende or Lamai may replace a long road leg, but the camp transfer is still part of the journey. The closest airstrip is not necessarily a walk from camp: Ubuntu’s northern page describes a much longer transfer than Sayari’s Kogatende transfer.

With only two Serengeti nights, keep one base. With a longer stay, a central-and-seasonal split can answer different wildlife interests, but moving camps uses part of a day. Avoid splitting nights merely to collect lodge names.

Compare the full safari arrangement

Asilia’s published Sayari and Ubuntu inclusions cover meals, scheduled drives and specified airstrip transfers, but exclude park-related charges and flights. A different lodge or a room booked separately may use a different structure. Compare who provides the vehicle, whether drives are shared or private, the fee exclusions and the total transfers before comparing nightly prices.

These properties are named examples, not an exhaustive shortlist, availability check or affiliate recommendation. No particular sighting follows from choosing one of them.
