The route and six-night allocation
Use Arusha → Tarangire → central Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha for a first Tanzania safari combining different habitats without moving camp every day. This suggested seven-day itinerary has six nights: one in Arusha, one at Tarangire, three in the central Serengeti and one near the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Day seven finishes in Arusha; it is not a seventh hotel night.
The allocation is an editorial recommendation, not a packaged tour or a minimum stay set by the parks. It favours central Serengeti wildlife viewing over chasing the migration into the far north. If Mara River crossings are the main reason for travelling, change the route rather than adding Kogatende as a long day trip from Seronera.
Day 1: arrive and sleep in Arusha
Treat arrival day as a transfer and rest day. Stay in Arusha and meet the driver-guide before the road circuit begins. Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha Airport are different airports: put the actual arrival airport on the transfer booking, especially if connecting from an international flight to a safari flight.
Do not count this as a park day unless your arrival genuinely leaves enough daylight and the vehicle is ready. A delayed inbound flight should not force a late drive to Tarangire. Overnight: Arusha.
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire
Leave Arusha in the morning for Tarangire and spend the usable remainder of the day on a game drive. TANAPA gives the road distance from Arusha to the main gate as 121 km. That is a gate distance, not a promise about arrival time at a camp deeper inside the park.
Tarangire adds river habitats, baobabs and elephant viewing to this circuit. Its river and swamps are important dry-season water sources, so this stop is particularly useful during the June–October dry period. Choose a stay inside the park or near the main-gate side for this short visit; a remote southern camp adds travel that a single night may not justify. Overnight: Tarangire area.
TANAPA: Tarangire access and habitatsDay 3: Tarangire to the central Serengeti
Make this the main transfer day. The road route goes through the Karatu and Ngorongoro area towards the Serengeti, with Naabi Hill an entry point on the southern approach. Continue to a central Serengeti base rather than trying to reach the Mara River region. The Ngorongoro crossing is transit today, not the crater-floor visit.
Allow for park formalities, a meal stop and slow wildlife tracks. Avoid promising a full morning in Tarangire and a full afternoon in the Serengeti on the same day. An Olduvai Gorge stop also uses time; leave it out if it pushes camp arrival late. Overnight: central Serengeti, first of three nights.
TANAPA: Serengeti access and airstrip geographyDays 4 and 5: two full Serengeti days
Keep the same central base for both days. Spend one day exploring the Seronera area and use the second for a longer drive chosen around wildlife movements and conditions. A packed lunch can avoid returning to camp in the middle of a longer outing; on a shorter day, a midday break may suit better.
Three nights produce two full days without packing up. They do not guarantee a particular predator sighting or a migration encounter. Central Serengeti is a useful general safari base; Ndutu and Kusini in calving season, or Kogatende and Lamai during the northern migration season, are different geographic choices. Overnights: central Serengeti on both nights.
Compare Serengeti stay areasDay 6: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro rim
Leave the central Serengeti with time for wildlife stops while travelling back towards Naabi Hill and Ngorongoro. Finish near the crater rim so the next morning does not begin with a drive from Arusha. This remains a transfer day, even where parts of the drive pass wildlife.
A rim stay is the convenient choice for this particular sequence. A Karatu hotel can be a workable alternative, but it changes the approach to the crater and adds driving before the descent. Do not compare the two as if their location were identical. Overnight: Ngorongoro rim area.
Plan the crater visit and compare basesDay 7: crater drive, then return to Arusha
Use the morning for the Ngorongoro Crater visit, then return towards Arusha. NCAA permits only four-wheel-drive vehicles into the crater. The crater floor is a vehicle safari, not a self-guided walking stop; NCAA does not allow walking safaris inside it.
The road return follows the crater excursion, so this is a substantial travel day. The safer editorial choice is an Arusha overnight after the circuit if you have an important flight connection. That would be an additional night outside this seven-day, six-night plan. If departing the same evening, the actual crater exit, airport transfer and flight check-in deadlines must fit together; this itinerary makes no connection guarantee.
NCAA: crater vehicle and walking rulesWhen to change this itinerary
For January–March calving interest, replace the central Serengeti block with a suitably located southern base around Ndutu or Kusini, or split the three nights only if the resulting drives still leave useful viewing time. For northern migration viewing, give Kogatende or Lamai its own multi-night block and consider flying one leg. Do not retain all the original stops and squeeze the north into the same seven days.
If you dislike long vehicle days, drop a park rather than shrinking every stay. Tarangire plus the Serengeti, or the Serengeti plus Ngorongoro, is a more manageable brief than a daily change of destination.
Choose a migration location by seasonWhat the quote needs to cover
Price the exact six overnight locations and the day-seven return, not just a seven-day headline. The quote should separate accommodation and meals, driver-guide and vehicle, Tarangire and Serengeti park charges, Ngorongoro transit or entry charges, the crater vehicle service charge and airport transfers. Identify any flight and its actual landing strip if you change to a fly-in version.
A three-night Serengeti room rate is not automatically a three-night safari package. Vehicle use, park fees and transfers can differ between road-circuit and camp-operated arrangements.
