Ngorongoro safari guide: crater visits, bases and fees

Choose Karatu or the crater rim, allow time for a Ngorongoro descent and understand the separate entry and vehicle service charges before booking.

How to include Ngorongoro in a safari

For a first northern Tanzania circuit, plan a dedicated Ngorongoro Crater game-drive day and choose whether to sleep in Karatu or on the crater rim. One night before the visit can fit a longer route; two nights are more comfortable if you want to return to the same base after the descent. These are our pacing recommendations, not official minimum stays.

Include Ngorongoro for wildlife in a compact volcanic basin with grasslands, swamps and woodland. Do not add it solely as a guaranteed rhino or Big Five checklist: the authority records these animals, but a visit cannot guarantee finding them. If your main goal is extended migration viewing, compare the crater’s cost and travel time with another night in the relevant Serengeti area.

Entry gates and crater hours

The authority lists Loduare as the main gate, 14 km from Karatu, and Naabi as the gate at the Serengeti boundary. These serve different legs of a northern circuit. The general conservation-area gates open 06:00–18:00, while the authority’s published crater-gate hours are 06:00–16:00. Do not interpret a late-afternoon conservation-area arrival as time for an immediate crater drive.

Arrange the descent and the onward drive as distinct parts of the day. If you plan to continue to the Serengeti afterward, locate the overnight camp and its sector before accepting a schedule. A crater visit followed by an unspecified “Serengeti transfer” leaves the longest part of the day unresolved.

How long should you stay?

For one night, arrive at your Karatu or rim base before the visit, descend the following morning and continue only if the onward route is workable. This is efficient on a longer road circuit but can make the crater day a long travel day. Two nights let you return to the same bed after game viewing and leave for the Serengeti on a separate day.

A crater-rim viewpoint is not a substitute for a descent. Equally, staying two nights near Ngorongoro does not mean you have booked two crater drives. Specify the actual number of descents and which day each takes place; the service fee is attached to a vehicle/trip.

Ngorongoro authority: separate crater service fee

What the published crater fees mean

On the authority’s tariff page checked on 24 October 2026, the entry permit for a non-East African adult aged 16 or above is US$70.80. The crater service fee for non-East African citizens is listed separately at US$295 per vehicle/trip. A vehicle permit is another line item, with the amount depending on registration and weight.

For two qualifying adults sharing one vehicle and one crater trip, the adult entries plus crater service fee alone come to US$436.60, or US$218.30 each. With four qualifying adults sharing that same service charge, those two components come to US$144.55 each. These are calculations from the displayed tariff, not full safari prices: they exclude the vehicle permit, vehicle hire, guide, accommodation, meals and any other applicable charges.

The tariff page says an issued permit is valid for one entry within 24 hours and that tariffs may change without notice. An extra night or a re-entry can therefore change the fee basket. Use a dated total for your itinerary. The child-age labels on the published entry table are inconsistent; obtain the applicable child category in writing rather than applying an adult example to a family.

Vehicle rules and walking

The authority’s crater FAQ permits only four-wheel-drive vehicles into the crater. It also explicitly says walking safaris are not allowed inside the crater, while walks can take place on the rim and in other areas. Treat those as separate activities, even if a general attraction list mentions nature walks.

If a walk matters to the booking, identify its location and arrangements separately from the crater game drive. A rim walk is not permission to leave the vehicle among wildlife on the crater floor.

Best time to visit and what to pack

The authority describes the crater as accessible throughout the year and the wider conservation area’s dry season as June–October. Its wet season is November–May. Year-round access is a broad planning statement, not a guarantee that every road or excursion is unaffected by weather.

The rim is cooler than the crater floor, nights are usually cold and June–August are the coldest months in the authority’s description. Bring a warm layer for an early departure and a rim overnight, plus rain protection for wet-period travel. Do not pack only for the warmer plains.

Ngorongoro Crater is not the whole conservation area

The wider area also contains Ndutu and other attractions. Sleeping in the conservation area does not prove that your camp is close to the crater descent, and a Ndutu-focused wildlife stay should not be treated as a crater-rim booking. Check the actual location against the experience you want.

On a longer northern circuit, Tarangire adds a river-and-woodland stay before the crater. Our Tarangire guide explains when its dry-season wildlife concentration justifies allocating two nights there.

Put the crater stop into the full route

A six-safari-night starting pattern is two near Tarangire, one near Ngorongoro and three in the relevant Serengeti sector. If you want two nights at the crater base, add time or remove another stop rather than pretending every transfer is wildlife viewing. Arrival and departure hotel nights sit outside that safari-night example.
