Choose the safari area before the lodge
For a first Masai Mara stay, choose a reserve or Mara Triangle base if your priority is daytime drives in the national reserve. Choose Naboisho if you want a conservancy-led stay with guided walks and night drives as well as game drives. A Talek-edge camp is another practical reserve-access option, but a river-facing tent does not necessarily sit inside the reserve.
Start with three nights in one base as an editorial recommendation. Two full days between arrival and departure are more useful than changing camps every night. The examples below establish location and accommodation differences from the properties’ own descriptions; they are not personal-stay reviews, availability checks or a ranking of every Mara lodge.

| Your decision | Mara Triangle | Talek reserve edge | Naboisho Conservancy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Reserve drives with a western-sector base. | A tented base beside the reserve and Talek River. | A stay built around conservancy drives, walks and night activities. |
| Named example | Mara Serena Safari Lodge. | Basecamp Maasai Mara. | Naboisho Camp or Encounter Mara, operated by Asilia. |
| Accommodation distinction | A built lodge with rooms, interconnecting options and a swimming pool. | River-view tents, including family accommodation. | Tented camps; compare the specific property’s facilities and package. |
| Main cost trap | A room rate is not proof that game drives and reserve fees are included. | Bordering the reserve does not make its admission free. | Conservancy fees and a separate national-reserve excursion can both apply. |
Mara Triangle: choose this for a western reserve base
Mara Serena describes its position on a hill in the Mara Triangle, with 74 rooms including one suite, interconnecting-room options and a pool. It is a useful example for travellers who want built rooms and lodge facilities rather than a small tented camp. Families can compare interconnecting rooms with a family tent elsewhere rather than treating “family-friendly” as a precise room configuration.
A larger lodge is a different stay from a small camp with fewer tents. Decide whether the pool, shared facilities and room layout matter more to you than a smaller guest count. Do not assume the lodge’s activities are included in a room-only or meal-plan rate: its website lists chargeable experiences.
Mara Serena: location, rooms and facilitiesTriangle access: use the manager’s rules, not a generic Mara assumption
Mara Conservancy states that fees depend on where visitors stay. For guests staying in the Triangle who enter from the Sekenani side, it directs payment at Purungat Bridge rather than paying the wrong reserve sector on the way. The manager also lists Oloololo Gate and Serena Airstrip among its ticket points.
The published 12-hour ticket runs from 06:00 to 18:00 regardless of entry time and does not carry overnight. That makes an arrival afternoon a real pricing question, not automatically part of the next morning’s entry. The guidance specifies cashless payments and appropriate identification. Have the camp’s exact stay location on the transfer and fee paperwork.
Mara Conservancy: payment points and entry validityTalek edge: Basecamp Maasai Mara as a tented example
Basecamp’s own description places it along the Talek River, bordering the national reserve. It lists 17 river-view tents, including two family tents, with private terraces and en-suite facilities. This suits a search for tented accommodation by the reserve rather than a built lodge in the Triangle.
The property lists shared day game drives among its activities. If vehicle exclusivity matters, have a private vehicle written into the proposal rather than assuming that a private tent comes with one. The family-tent descriptions on the website are inconsistent about bathroom arrangements; ask for the exact layout of the booked unit rather than relying on the category name.
Basecamp Maasai Mara: position, tents and listed activitiesNaboisho: choose the conservancy programme deliberately
Asilia describes Naboisho as a community-owned conservancy adjacent to the national reserve, with controlled camp and vehicle numbers. It permits guided walking safaris and night drives. Asilia operates Naboisho Camp and Encounter Mara there; compare those specific camps rather than assuming every conservancy has the same facilities.
This is the stronger option when the conservancy activities are part of why you are travelling. It is a weaker fit if your plan is to leave for reserve river areas every day. Asilia places the famous migration crossings inside the national reserve, so include the excursion, travel time and separate admission in a crossing-focused quote. A conservancy stay is not a river-crossing guarantee.

For accommodation, compare the actual sleeping and bathroom arrangement, family-unit layout, access to the dining area and power provision. A permanent en-suite tent can offer more facilities than the word “camping” suggests. If step-free access matters, obtain measurements and the exact unit; an operator’s general accessibility claim is not a transfer or bathroom assessment.
For the safari programme, compare shared versus private vehicle, drives included per day, permitted areas, meals, drinks, conservancy charges and reserve admissions. Full board describes meals; it does not by itself establish which drives or transfers are included. Do not compare a room-and-meals rate with a fly-in game package as if the difference were entirely room quality.
Book the airstrip for the camp, not just “Masai Mara”
Safarilink serves multiple Mara airstrips. Its 2026 timetable says some strips have minimum passenger requirements, operations can combine loads at alternative strips, and aircraft landings are limited to a maximum of four stops. A single published flight duration is not a reliable door-to-tent transfer time.
Have the camp identify the intended strip and supply the pickup. For a road arrival, specify the camp and entrance route rather than only the park name. Keep the same base for a short stay; on a longer trip, combine reserve and conservancy nights only if you will use both programmes.

For the seven-day Nairobi–Amboseli–Mara route, three Mara nights leave two full days here. Use one base unless a split stay serves a specific activity. If you are still deciding whether the Mara belongs in the trip, read the destination guide before comparing room categories.
