Samburu safari guide: reserve, Buffalo Springs or Kalama?

Choose a Samburu safari for northern Kenya’s dry-country wildlife. Compare base areas, two or three nights, road and air arrivals, and the fees a quote must separate.

What makes a Samburu safari different?

Choose Samburu for northern dry-country wildlife, particularly Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, often grouped as the Samburu Special Five.[10] The name describes a wildlife interest, not a guaranteed five-animal checklist. The Ewaso Nyiro river landscape gives this trip a different emphasis from the Mara’s open plains.

Our recommendation is three nights if Samburu is your main wildlife stop. Two nights can work as one part of a longer Kenya trip, but give you only one full day between transfers. With a short holiday, compare one northern base against one Mara base before trying to include both.

Do not book by “Samburu” in the camp name alone

The region includes Samburu National Reserve, Buffalo Springs National Reserve and neighbouring conservancies. The airline’s Samburu destination page also covers Shaba and access to the wider northern safari region.[2] Those names do not mean that every camp uses the same entrance, airstrip or daily drive.

Two first-party examples make the distinction clear: Ashnil Samburu Camp says it is in Buffalo Springs, while Saruni Samburu says it is in Kalama Conservancy.[10][3] Choose the operating base and drive areas before comparing the bedrooms.

Buffalo Springs: a named road gate and airstrip

Ashnil’s own directions give Buffalo Springs Airstrip for its fly-in access and place the camp 12 km from Ngare Mara Gate by road.[10] This makes it a concrete Buffalo Springs option rather than evidence that all Samburu camps use that gate.

The same page estimates 345 km and about five hours from Nairobi. Treat that as the camp’s road estimate, not a promise for every vehicle or departure point. Keep the transfer day light enough that traffic and stops do not erase the only planned game drive.

Kalama: choose it for the conservancy programme

Saruni Samburu identifies its location in Kalama Conservancy and access to both Kalama and Samburu National Reserve.[3] That suits travellers who want a lodge-led conservancy stay rather than a room used only between reserve drives. Compare the included drive areas and number of reserve excursions, not merely an “all-inclusive” description.

A conservancy activity should carry its own location, guide arrangement and any age restriction. Do not infer walking or night-drive permissions for a national reserve from what a neighbouring lodge offers.

Road or air from Nairobi?

Flying is worth pricing when a short trip would otherwise lose much of its first and last day on the road. Safarilink publishes services from Nairobi Wilson to the Samburu region and a Samburu–Mara connection.[2] Its timetable contains different services and seasonal detail; do not turn the destination name into a promise of a nonstop flight, fixed duration or connection on your travel date.

Have the booking name the landing strip and camp pickup. For a Buffalo Springs property, start with its own directions; a camp elsewhere in the region may need a different strip. Include Nairobi airport transfers and sufficient connection time as separate parts of the journey.

How to use two or three nights

For two nights, arrive with time for an afternoon drive if the transfer allows, keep the middle day in your chosen wildlife area and use the final morning only if your flight or road departure permits it. For three nights, use the extra full day for a second reserve or conservancy activity only when it changes the experience; you can also spend it repeating the same productive drive area.

These are suggested allocations, not booked itineraries. Do not plan one reserve per night simply to collect names. Three northern nights plus three Mara nights is a reasonable six-night editorial starting pattern, but it still needs a workable transfer day and separate Nairobi arrangements.

Dates: dry conditions help, heat still matters

January–February and the main mid-year dry-season window are useful dates to compare for northern wildlife viewing. Asilia’s Kenya calendar specifically describes Samburu in February as dry, dusty and hazy, with wildlife easier to spot.[13] Dry weather is not a guarantee of comfortable temperatures all day.

For a heat-sensitive traveller, the camp’s shade, room ventilation and ability to pause between drives matter. With rainy-season dates, do not assume an arid-looking landscape makes every river crossing, track or camp approach usable. The Kenya calendar explains the broader wet and dry periods; actual access remains a dated route question.

What the price must include

Separate accommodation and meals, guiding and vehicles, the named reserve admissions, conservancy charges and transfers. If staying in Buffalo Springs or Kalama but visiting Samburu National Reserve, identify the extra reserve entry and the transport to it. An included conservancy drive is not the same purchase as a day inside another reserve.

We have not qualified a current authority-issued tariff covering the different Samburu-region jurisdictions, so this guide does not publish one regional entry price. Request the dated visitor-category rate for each protected area in your itinerary. This unresolved price detail need not prevent comparing the bases, but it must be resolved before accepting a total.

Samburu, Amboseli or the Mara?

Keep Samburu when the northern species and river-country base are the reason for going. Choose Amboseli when elephants, wetlands and the Kilimanjaro setting are the priority; choose the Mara when plains wildlife or the visiting migration herds are the main objective. You do not need all three to make a worthwhile first Kenya safari.
