Where to start
For a first South Africa safari, choose Kruger National Park if you want to drive yourself between public rest camps, or book a guided lodge if you want someone else to organise the wildlife drives and meals. Addo Elephant National Park is the more coherent alternative when your wider trip is already in the Eastern Cape. Do not choose a park from a photograph and only afterwards discover that it sits on the other side of the country.
Our starting allocation is three or four safari nights in one region. That is an editorial recommendation, not a park minimum: three nights gives you two complete days between arrival and departure. With a short stay, a second distant park usually takes time away from the safari you came for.
Kruger: public rest camps and your own vehicle
Kruger lets you separate accommodation, transport, meals and activities rather than buying a single lodge package. Its tourist road network includes tar and gravel; the public driving rules apply whichever accommodation you choose. Skukuza is a useful southern starting base with a shop, restaurant, fuel and car hire. Lower Sabie suits a southern stay focused around the Sabie River area. Satara moves the trip into the central park and is better treated as another overnight base than a quick detour from the south.
Choose this format if you are happy to drive, plan routes and manage supplies. Choose guided travel instead if navigating and watching the clock would make the trip feel like work. A self-drive booking does not include a guide just because the accommodation is inside a wildlife park.
SANParks: Kruger access and public road networkA guided lodge: compare the actual reserve and inclusions
A lodge described as being in the Kruger area may be inside the national park, on a concession or in a neighbouring reserve. These are not interchangeable locations. Before comparing prices, identify the property, its access point and the area where its drives operate. A national-park booking does not automatically give you access to neighbouring private land.
Request the price for your dates and room occupancy, then compare included drives, meals, drinks, conservation or reserve charges and airport transfers. Ask whether the vehicle is shared and whether children can join the advertised activities. Paying more for a lodge can remove driving and meal planning; it cannot purchase a guaranteed animal sighting.
There is also a middle option: stay at a public Kruger rest camp and add a SANParks guided drive. The published SANParks game-drive activities do not allow children under six, so this is not an automatic solution for every family.
SANParks: guided drives and minimum ageAddo: use it with an Eastern Cape trip
Addo makes geographical sense beside Gqeberha and an Eastern Cape road trip. SANParks states that normal cars can use the tourist roads; its Bedrogfontein 4×4 trail is a separate activity, not the default game-viewing network. Choose Addo when that location saves you a separate journey to the northeast, not because a short Addo stop is a substitute for every Kruger experience.
For arrival from Gqeberha, follow SANParks’ current advice to avoid the R335 through Motherwell because of safety concerns. Use the N2 via Colchester for Matyholweni, or continue via Paterson for Main Camp. Do not follow an older camp page or a navigation app into the discouraged route.

SANParks’ 13 October 2026 notice says tourism operations remain open following confirmed foot-and-mouth disease in kudu. It also describes strengthened biosecurity, including vehicle disinfection before leaving designated game-viewing areas. Allow for the park’s access and movement instructions rather than interpreting open tourism as an absence of controls. This is a dated operational notice, not a prediction of conditions on a later trip.
SANParks: Addo tourism and biosecurity notice, 13 October 2026Match Kruger dates to the experience
Kruger has hot rainy summers, broadly October to March, and a drier winter, broadly April to September. SANParks identifies winter’s thinner vegetation and more restricted water as helpful for viewing. Pack warm layers for early or evening drives even when daytime conditions are mild. Summer can suit travellers who accept heat, denser vegetation and rain; a seasonal pattern does not establish tomorrow’s road conditions.
Kruger is a malaria area. Discuss the actual destination, dates and travelling party with a qualified travel-health clinician; do not treat a winter booking as medical clearance. This guide does not prescribe prevention or assess individual suitability.
SANParks: Kruger seasonal climateBuild the journey around the first and last camp
For a southern Kruger stay, compare Skukuza and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport against the location of your first camp. For Satara and the central area, compare Hoedspruit and Orpen access. Book the flight and onward car or transfer as one workable journey; an airport marketed for Kruger is not necessarily close to your chosen bed.
If combining Cape Town with Kruger, treat the flight and transfer as a separate travel leg. If combining the coast with Addo, select the arrival gate before booking the last road-trip night. In either case, avoid a late arrival that relies on driving inside a park after its gates close.
SANParks: Kruger airports and arrival optionsBudget for the trip format, not just the room
For self-drive, total the exact accommodation, car rental, cover and excess terms, fuel, food, park conservation fees and optional guided activities. For a lodge, identify what the package already includes before adding those items again. Conservation fees depend on nationality or residency category, age and visit date; the Kruger tariff changes on 1 November 2026.
Use the existing safari cost guide for the dated tariff examples and a comparable booking basket. It is more useful than comparing a bare rest-camp unit with an inclusive lodge rate.
