Can you drive yourself in Kruger?
Yes. Kruger has a public tourist road network and recognised rest camps where visitors can stay in their own booked accommodation or campsite. A self-drive safari means you manage the car, route, supplies and return time; it does not mean unrestricted access to tracks or permission to follow animals off-road.
For a first trip, choose one southern base for three nights, or two bases for a longer stay, before booking the car. You do not need to turn every safari day into a camp transfer. A closed passenger vehicle is the straightforward starting choice; special trails and vehicle permits are separate from the ordinary public road network.
SANParks: public tourist roads and vehicle restrictionsMatch the gate to your first bed
For Skukuza, compare Kruger Gate with Phabeni rather than entering at whichever gate a generic map suggests. SANParks lists 12 km and about 30 minutes from Kruger Gate, compared with 39 km and about one hour and three quarters from Phabeni. The shorter in-park leg does not by itself establish the best external approach on your travel day.
For Lower Sabie, the official approach is Crocodile Bridge, followed by 34 km for which SANParks allows about two hours. For Satara, Orpen is the named approach, followed by 48 km and about two hours. Use these camp-specific allowances when testing your arrival plan. A highway arrival estimate to the boundary is not an arrival estimate to camp.
SANParks: Skukuza gate distances and driving allowancesRead entrance times and camp times separately
In October, the published schedule opens both entrance and camp gates at 05:30 and closes all gates at 18:00. In November through January, entrance gates open at 05:30, while camp gates open at 04:30; all gates close at 18:30. In June and July, both open at 06:00 and all close at 17:30. The other months have their own entries in the official table.
An outside stay therefore does not always give you the same first driving hour as an inside camp. Use the schedule for your month and the instructions on your entry permit. You must be in camp or outside the park before closing; a sighting is not an exemption. Do not build an ordinary arrival around the emergency late-arrival procedure.
SANParks: monthly entrance and camp gate hoursPlan a small loop, not a mileage target
Use a camp as the centre of the day: leave after opening, take a manageable public-road loop, stop only at authorised get-out points, and return with time to spare. Make the afternoon route shorter if you spent longer at morning sightings. Keep the return road and closing time visible throughout the day.
The limits are 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel. Those are maximum legal speeds, not reliable journey averages. SANParks recommends an average around 30 km/h on tourist roads for safety and viewing; its own camp-access estimates can be slower. Leave time for animals on the road and queues at sightings instead of calculating a transfer at the speed limit.
SANParks: road surfaces, limits and recommended viewing paceRules that change how you drive
Stay in the vehicle except at designated places. Do not lean out of a window or sunroof, leave vehicle doors open, feed wildlife or follow it off-road. A road marked no entry remains closed even if another vehicle uses it. Do not use a drone.
Keep wildlife space and a clear escape route rather than driving up close for a photograph. If an animal occupies the road, wait and avoid crowding it. Camp noticeboards and entry instructions matter more than an old saved route when roads or local conditions change.
SANParks: Kruger code of conductBook the unit, then organise food and fuel
Compare the actual accommodation category and base occupancy, not only the camp name. Establish whether your unit has its own kitchen and bathroom or uses communal facilities. Skukuza, Lower Sabie and Satara list shops and filling stations, but that is not a promise of every product or uninterrupted service. Carry enough drinking water and food for the planned drive, and refuel before the next long leg.
Arrange the rental’s collection and return points around your flights. Read cover, excess, gravel-road and assistance terms; do not assume that ordinary park access determines what a rental contract covers. Download the park map and keep the booking and identification accessible at the gate. Kruger’s entry process requires identification and the registration form.
SANParks: gate registration, identification and day bookingsSeparate conservation fees from the safari budget
Through 31 October 2026, the published standard international conservation charge is R602 per adult aged 12 or older and R300 per child aged 2–11 per day. The schedule for 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027 lists R692 and R345 respectively. Other citizenship or residency categories have different charges; rates remain subject to change.
For two adults in the standard international category, one chargeable day is R1,204 under the first tariff or R1,384 under the next. These are calculated conservation-only examples, not a day’s complete safari cost. Establish chargeable days in the reservation rather than silently equating them with nights. Add accommodation, the rental, fuel, meals and activities separately.

If you want wildlife viewing after the public self-drive day ends, use an authorised SANParks sunset or night drive rather than your own car. Book for your actual camp and review the activity’s departure arrangements. SANParks’ game-drive activities exclude children under six.
Kruger is a malaria area. A rest-camp reservation and a vehicle do not establish medical suitability: get advice for your dates and party from a qualified travel-health clinician.
SANParks: guided sunset and night drivesBooking order for a first self-drive
Choose the park sector and nights, reserve the specific camp units, then align flights and car hire with a feasible first-day arrival. For an outside stay, reserve day access where appropriate. Before departure, recheck the monthly gate table, park notices and chargeable conservation fees. Leave the first evening free of an ambitious drive if the journey to the park is already long.
